Last week brought an exciting donation of personal papers and books from pediatric surgeon John R. "Jack" Campbell, M.D. Dr. Campbell was the first full-time pediatric surgeon in the state of Oregon. In 2008, the Campbell Lectures in Pediatric Surgery were established at OHSU "to bring new ideas and thinking in pediatric surgery to OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital." Dr. Campbell was interviewed in 2005 for the OHSU Oral History Program.
Dr. Campbell's papers present a rich personal history, starting with his days as a medical student and extending throughout his career as a surgeon and administrator at OHSU. The book collection includes many titles originally belonging to Dr. Campbell's father, who was also a doctor. Included are 19th and early 20th century volumes on surgery that will be unique additions to our collections.
The materials were previously housed in a departmental library bearing Dr. Campbell's name. As that space is being repurposed, HC&A is pleased to be able to provide a permanent home for the collections, making them available for future research.
