Charles M. Grossman, M.D., 1914-2013
Last week we learned the sad news that our great friend, Charles M. Grossman, M.D., passed away on July 16 at the age of 98. We have heard from mutual friends that his daughter was by his side, and the family is preparing an obituary.
For many years, Dr. Grossman visited HC&A every Tuesday morning, usually with a file or two to add to his papers, held in our collections. Longtime readers of this blog will remember Sara Piasecki's many posts on the collection, highlighting content related to Grossman's long career in medicine and social activism. He continued bringing additions to the collection until this summer, when his health finally made it difficult for him to visit regularly.
If I could make only one statement about Charles Grossman, it would be that one could not possibly live life more fully than he did. His life was characterized by tireless dedication to causes that moved him; vigilance in aligning his professional integrity and personal values; and rich friendships that bridged generations, professions, and nations. Like hundreds of others all over the world, I am proud to have called him my friend.
