We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Brooks, M.D. on June 30, 2013. Dr. Brooks served as superintendent of the Oregon State Hospital from 1955-1981, and was considered an innovator in mental health care. He became widely known to the public for allowing the Milos Forman film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to be shot at the hospital, and for playing a small role in the film.
His contributions to mental health care and its representation in popular culture are recognized in obituaries in the Salem Statesman Journal and the New York Times. A memorial on the Website of the Oregon State Hospital Museum features photographs and ephemera from his time as superintendent.
