Archives job workshop in Portland

For our readers who are pursuing careers in archives, I want to heartily recommend an upcoming workshop sponsored by Northwest Archivists and the Oregon Historical Society:

Seeking - and getting - an archives job

Instructor: Arlene Schmuland
October 6-7, 2011
Oregon Historical Society, Portland OR

"This workshop focuses on the job search process: from preparing application materials to writing interview thank you notes and crafting application materials to interviewing. The workshop is intended for both archivists new to the profession and archivists who want to brush up on their job-seeking skills."

The instructor, Arlene Schmuland, is head of Archives and Special Collections at the Consortium Library, University of Alaska Anchorage. During 2010, she published the outstanding "That elusive archives job" blog. As a no-nonsense resource for job-hunting archivists, there's nothing else to match it. Her tips about resumes, cover letters and interviews are invaluable. It also demystifies the recruitment process from the other side of the table. Every time I've been involved in recruiting for an archives position, I've wished more of the applicants had sought out this blog!

If you're in the Portland area and pursuing a career in archives, this is a unique opportunity to get some coaching that's tailored to your choice of career.
