Starr-Edwards valves: ready for their close-up

Above: Richard York and Aaron Bieleck of OHSU Photography & Graphic Design, with Richard Mullins, M.D.

Earlier this week, I brought our friends in the university's Photography and Graphic Design department some unusual subjects: a selection of Starr-Edwards heart valve prototypes from the Jeri L. Dobbs Collection. In consultation with Dr. Rich Mullins, who is conducting historical research with the collection, OHSU's professional photographers created extensive documentary images of the valves. The photographs will support Dr. Mullins's research on the development of the Starr-Edwards heart valve, and will also be available in HC&A for consultation by other researchers. Additional photographs of Starr-Edwards heart valves are available online in the DRL.

Many of the valve prototypes from the Dobbs collection will also be displayed this fall as part of our upcoming exhibit on Lowell Edwards.
