We were saddened and surprised to see in yesterday's Oregonian the announcement of the death of Richard P. Lewis, M.D. Dr. Lewis passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2008.
The son of former University of Oregon Medical School legend Howard P. Lewis, M.D., Richard Phelps Lewis was educated at Yale University (1957) and the University of Oregon Medical School (MD, 1961). He completed an internship and residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston before returning to UOMS for a cardiology fellowship. Lewis led the Division of Cardiology at the Ohio State University from 1971-1986, and served as the president of the American College of Cardiology from 1996-97.
A scholarship fund has been established in his name at OSU.
